Falls Church, VA, April 23, 2020 - The Military Health System is working to provide you with health options while you practice social distancing to combat the coronavirus pandemic. TRICARE covers telehealth services to include otherwise-covered mental health services.

Telehealth options include:

  • Telemental health services, including individual psychotherapy, crisis management, family therapy, or group therapy (expected to continue after the coronavirus pandemic)

  • Medication assisted treatment (only available during the coronavirus pandemic)

  • Opioid treatment programs (only available during the coronavirus pandemic)

  • Intensive outpatient programs (only available during the coronavirus pandemic), which include medication management, case management, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and discharge planning

Be sure to talk to your provider if you have questions about telehealth services. Depending on your TRICARE plan, you may first need an authorization or referral. Ask your regional contractor for help. Active duty service members need a referral for telemental health care. If you filed a medical claim for telehealth services that was previously denied, you should resubmit it.

Using Telehealth Services

Using a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can connect with your provider by secure video conferencing. Telemedicine services don’t include:

  • Audio-only conferencing

  • Phone calls

  • Texting

Remember, not all providers have telehealth services. Be sure to ask your provider if it’s something they offer. These options can make a huge difference for you and your family. Continue to do your part to lower the spread of COVID-19. And don’t forget that with TRICARE, you have access to the care you need.
