Family Planning and the TRICARE Benefit

Falls Church, Va, December 11, 2014 - There are many options for managing your reproductive health. TRICARE covers several birth control options, but only when prescribed by a TRICARE-authorized provider.

There are several types of birth control; intrauterine devices, hormonal methods and barrier methods. Each of these methods is reversible and should be considered effective when being used correctly and consistently. It is best to speak with your health care provider to discuss which option is best for you and your family.

If none of these options seem right for you, there are others to consider. For more information, go to the "Family Planning" section of the TRICARE website.

When planning to become pregnant, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer several healthy behaviors women can adapt to ensure a healthy pregnancy:

  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight
  • Quit tobacco use
  • Abstain from drugs and alcohol use

TRICARE also offers tips and resources for living a healthy lifestyle on the "Health and Wellness" section of the TRICARE website.
